Kenya - Overview Print

Safari is Swahili for "journey" and it is in Kenya where safaris began.  Magnificent National Parks and reserves brim with wildlife.  Lush forests, breathtaking mountains and tribal cultures plus the amazing variety and quality of birdlife make Kenya a fascinating destination.

The 500 kms of golden beaches of the Kenyan Coast invite the visitor to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.  It is perhaps the wildlife more than anything else that draws visitors to Kenya boasting  some of the finest reserves in Africa- and visitors will be thrilled at the sights of lions, leopards, cheetah, elephant, gazelle, buffalo, hippo, rhino and hundreds more.  It is the abundance of wildlife, the rich history and culture, friendly people and comfortable accommodations that makes clients wanting to return again and again.  Kenya is with no doubt Africa's favorite destination.

People who go on safari usually are thinking of all the animals they will see, but once there they find themselves meeting the people, and soon they find that the people are as interesting and photogenic as the wild animals, they greet you with warm handshakes, beautiful smiles, they welcome you into their culture, so when you go back home you find when telling of your experience it isn't just about the animals they have seen, but the people also.

History-Fossils found in East Africa suggest that proto-humans roamed the area more than 20 million years ago.  Recent finds near Lake Turkana indicate that hominids lived in the area 2.6 million years ago.

Cushitic speaking people from what is now Sudan and Ethiopia moved into the area that is now called Kenya beginning in 2000BC.  Arab traders began frequenting the Kenya coast around the first century AD.  During the first millennium AD, Nilotic and Bantu peoples moved into the region, and the latter now comprised two thirds of Kenya's population.  The Swahili language, a Bantu language with significant Arabic vocabulary, developed as a trade language for the region.  English is taught in the schools, so everywhere you go there is English spoken.  There are 42 different tribes of people in Kenya, so you will hear many dialects of language spoken, but Swahili and English are the most often heard.

The wonderful part of Kenya is there is no bad time to go on safari; the weather is similar to California weather.  Contrary to some beliefs that Africa is HOT, in Kenya some areas can be warmer during their summer months, but evenings do cool down, most of Kenya is higher altitude ranging on the coast to sea level to Samburu in the North at around 3500 feet ASL, to some places, Mt. Kenya at 7000 plus  feet ASL . They have rain in late November into December, and light rains in April; the rest of the year is great.  The best time to visit is during the migration of the Wildebeest and Zebras, which is June through to March.  The most famous of all National Parks is the Maasai Mara, which is awesome in size, and so vast the country side is, you can see for miles, and no paved roads, no cement, no buildings or telephone poles.  It is waiting for you!
