Most people go to Kenya to see the wildlife, but some want to meet the rural peo-ple, and get to know them and their way of life. We have created the Eco tours in to the rural area, so you can do just that. We visit their primary and pre-schools, a part of the only industry there in the area, a rock quarry, to see how they make building blocks by hand, no machines.
We visit a small village, where you can interact with the peo-ple of the village, maybe have lunch with them. Taste the foods they serve to guests. Meet the man who does the wood carvings of animals that you will find in all of the sa-fari lodges, meet the womenwho make beautiful purses and baskets from scissile, they do the dying of the cords and then weave these baskets. See a true rural school, this is an eye-opener, as they are happy with very little. A soccer ball brings such big smiles.

MIGRATION TIME IS COMING UP!
Migration time starts on July 1, and goes through to the end of October, so now is the time to make your plans to go see the migration of the wil-debeest and zebras. Don’t wait too long as the lodges in the Maasai Mara fill up some-times a year in advance. It is called a wonder of the world and is exciting to see, hun-dreds of animals roaming the Mara. Close behind are the lions, cheehtas, jackals and hyenas. Don’t make any more excuses, schedule the vacation.

WHAT TIME OF THE YEAR IS GOOD TO GO TO KENYA
Kenya is blessed with good weather most all year around. Light rains come in late Febru-ary into March, and again in December. It is close to south-ern California type of weather so any time of the year is a good time to go. If you want to go in the off season, when the lodges aren’t crowded, then don’t go during migration time. But, migration time is the most exciting, the chance to see hun-dreds of thousands of wildebeest roaming the grass-lands of the Mara, also it is a time when you will see the most of the lions, and other preda-tors.
I have been asked “will I see animals when I go in off sea-son?” Yes, you will see lots of animals, it is not a zoo. It is their home land, and they are there. One lady kept asking “will I see any giraffes”, (she was traveling over the New Years Holiday). After we had-seen maybe the 25th giraffe, she said that was enough for her, she had no idea she would see more than one or two her whole safari. By the end of the first day, she who said she did-n’t take a lot of pictures, had run her memory card com-pletely out. Each night after that I had to download her pic-tures into my computer and make DVD;s for her so she could take pictures the next day. I always carry blank DVD;s just for that reason.

SAFARI LODGES
There are many different types of safari lodges in the National parks. There are some lodges outside the boundaries of the parks, these are usually a lot less in cost, but you have farther to drive into the parks for your game drives. If you stay in lodges or camps within the parks it is less time spent on the road and more animals you will see during your game drives. The lodges differ in price range , so be very careful when booking one on line, as it may look good in the pictures, but when you get there it may not be what it said it was. There are lodges/safari camps we will not use as the clients are our first concern, and some of those camps are not security fenced so the client might have an en-counter with a buffalo or elephant, not a good thing to have happen. Please check out my web site with the accommodation list of what we recommend.

247 Tusks shipped from Kenya Seized
| It still is going on, sad but true. The Thai authorities inter-cepted a shipment from Kenya of 247 elephant tusks, the tusks are worth $3.3 million US dol-lars, and had been labeled as frozen fish on the papers. The tusks, equated to at least 123 elephants that had been killed for the ivory. After some in-vestigation it was discovered that the ivory came from Selous Park in Tanzania. And shipped through Kenya port. Tanzania and Zambia are two countries that want to resume trade in ivory, they were among countries that en-gaged Kenya at the Convention on International Trade in En-dangered species over the 2007 ban on its trade , Kenya suc-ceeded in having a nine-year ban upheld. |

Next Safari is Special– Ngu Nyumu Well
Kenya here we come! June is just around the corner. Thanks to the Santa Barbara North Rotary and the Lan-gata Rotary in Nairobi there is a new well in the village of Ngu-Nyumu in Central Kenya. We will be doing a 12 day safari and also visiting the site of the new well to place a plaque in the base of the well for the local club.
We will be spending about three nights in the village so the Rotary people will get to hear for themselves how much this water well will change the lives of those in this village. They will be able to see what the hardships have been for years, without clean drinking water and also water for their animals.
This well will forever change their lives, the well is free flow-ing now as it isn’t even pressure tested yet, it is putting out at least 30 gallons per minute and running down the roads. They have managed to fix it so the wa-ter is now at least going into pip-ing and into a tank for storage where people can come and get water from. I have had phone calls to tell me about the water, most of those calling can hardly talk as they are almost crying they are so happy, I in turn get teary eyed and get a lump in my throat as I have been there and seen how hard their lives have been for years.

Airfares To Kenya
Air fares to East Africa change from day to day. If it sounds good, grab it! As summer gets closer the flights fill up, and the rates go up.I did a recent search for rates with different airlines, and also searched different days of the week. If you go mid week flights seem to be less than those closer to the weekend.
KLM flight on Wednesday was running $2290, on Thursday it went to $2699. American AL was a bit higher, Emirates was about $2600, but it was a lot of time spent in Dubai. The KLM flight on Thursday was an eight hour layover in Amsterdam, the Wednesday one was a two hour layover. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to decide which is best. The trick is to plan ahead, espe-cially if you want to use air miles. Delta told me they open their reservation 331 days in advance , so plan ahead!
